As a practitioner, Dr. Farina was also involved with community-based research and intervention research projects, including pilot studies of the somatic based trauma-focused intervention. She continues to provide mental health evaluations for individuals seeking asylum and U-Visas for victims of crimes. She has extensive training in the area of trauma (Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Trauma; Structured Sensory Interventions for Traumatized Children, Adolescents and Parents; Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics; and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).
In her research, Dr. Farina focuses on the impact of war related trauma on families and parenting, trauma-focused interventions, mental health outcomes among international and transracial adoptees, impact of racism on mental health, community-based research, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, mixed methods research, qualitative research, and social media research. Dr. Farina teaches courses in the areas of social work practice, human development, and trauma-informed social work practice.
