Dr. Farina has provided clinical services for refugee and immigrant children and adults, adoptees, children in foster care, and perinatal Latinas. She developed research informed models of assessment for immigrant adults and children and created a somatic based intervention for children to decrease trauma symptoms. 

As a practitioner, Dr. Farina was also involved with community-based research and intervention research projects, including pilot studies of the somatic based trauma-focused intervention. She continues to provide mental health evaluations for individuals seeking asylum and U-Visas for victims of crimes. She has extensive training in the area of trauma (Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Trauma; Structured Sensory Interventions for Traumatized Children, Adolescents and Parents; Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics; and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). 

In her research, Dr. Farina focuses on the impact of war related trauma on families and parenting, trauma-focused interventions, mental health outcomes among international and transracial adoptees, impact of racism on mental health, community-based research, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, mixed methods research, qualitative research, and social media research. Dr. Farina teaches courses in the areas of social work practice, human development, and trauma-informed social work practice.
